Austin Kiddie Limits
14 Sept 2007
Austin, TX

We left after 9 today as I was trying to tie up loose ends at work and finish the roundup. We also stooped by Target to pick up sunscreen (which the girls applied generously and I didn't, unfortunately). We got to downtown fast, but spent some time finding a parking deck that wasn't already full. We picked a wicked one, and I hope I don't have to go there again tomorrow. We got the car parked and then walked 6 stories down the exit ramp. In three blocks we got to the buses and got on; a short ride later and another walk got us to the entrance. I misunderstood the website. It said that the box office opened at 10, but that didn't mean the gates opened at 10. We had to wait 45 minutes for the gates to open, but we got through and walked quickly over to the Austin Kiddie Limits. Thankfully, they had installed a shade screen in front of the stage, so we were able to stay quite cool. Sara Hickman started the show off; Chloe was quite excited by all the beach balls that were around, and we had a great time playing. After the first set was done, the girls went to decorate free canvas bags from HEB. They say one canvas bag saves five plastic ones, but knowing how we use our canvas bags for years, the number must be much, much higher. While they were decorating the bags, I spotted Stefan of Zoglobble and introduced myself to him. It was nice to finally get to meet him, even though it was in a very hectic place. The girls loved playing the "learn to play guitar" guitars.

We headed back to the stage -- Sefan said to look for Karen from The BummKinn Band, and I did find her. It was again nice to meet someone in person. She was very friendly and promised that we would get to meet the band. The show started and was really great. They played a lot of new songs, which was cool, but the highlight for me was when they did my favorite "Snowman in the Freezer". After the show we did get the chance to meet with the band, which of course always makes the show that much more memorable. Chloe then wanted to get a face painting. Camille chose to color in a coloring book instead. Despite my worries about food, HEB had some great healthy snacks that were very affordable, so we were set with celery and peanut butter.

Next up was Jambo, and I really liked them. I hadn't heard their music before, but I'd like to hear more. Deb in SF came over to say hi; it was nice to see her again, but it is so loud there, that it isn't a great place to chat about things. After that, the girls got their hair "punked out" at the hair place and Camille painted a tile for a park in East austin. Next up was Daddy-A-Go-Go. Seems strange that the first time we get to hear this Atlanta band is in Austin, but hey, they were great. The dad and his two sons and their drummer friend put on a great show. It was nice to meet John after the show and I hope we will get to meet him again soon, perhaps closer to home. During the show, Chloe noticed the huge plume of black smoke from behind us. later we learned that there had been a minor explosion and some workers were seriously hurt. We hope that they are doing okay; how horrible ...

The girls then both went to color. Camlile got up the nerve to have a Hip-Hop Lesson. She did really well, much braver than I ever would be. As soon as Camille was done, Chloe, never to be left out, decided she wanted her turn. Once that was done, we headed back to the stage (we left our chairs and blanket just sitting there the whole time) to see the School of Rock All-Stars. Camille was too tired to enjoy it, but Chloe was still bouncing around. After that, the raffle took place. So many people had left already that we had a great chance of winning something, but we didn't.

The field was MUCH more crowded as we left. We got across and then out and then over to the buses. The trip back was super fast; I couldn't believe how early we made it home, even with Friday evening rush hour.
